Filing Special Civil Part Complaints
Special Civil Part complaints must be filed in the county where at least one defendant lives, or
where the defendant’s business is located. If there is more than one defendant, the complaint can be
filed in the county where any one of the defendants lives. If the defendants do not live in New Jersey,
the complaint must be filed in the county where the action originated. Complaint forms are available on
the Judiciary’s Web Site at www.njcourtsonline.com.
Special Civil complaints may be filed by mail or in person. The court will process the
documents filed, assign a docket number and serve the defendant(s) with the summons. It is very
important that the plaintiff provide the court with the defendant’s correct address and that reference is
made to the docket number whenever inquiries are made about the case.
